Paintings, dames and tulips, the elements of this period piece set in 7th century Amsterdam. Watch the Tulip Fever trailer below and see if you're up for some romantic intrigue.

The movie is penned by Tom Stoppard (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead), adapting Deborah Moggach's book of the same name, and directed by The Other Boleyn Girl's Justin Chadwick. The cast includes Alicia Vikander, Judi Dench, Christoph Waltz, Dane DeHaan, Holliday Grainger, Jack O'Connell, Zack Galifianakis, Matthew Morrison, Tom Hollander, Cara Delevingne, Cressida Bonas, and David Harewood.

Vikander stars as an unhappily married woman who starts an affair with the painter (DeHaan) hired by her husband (Waltz) to paint her portrait, with the lovers eventually taking a chance on the booming market for tulip bulbs in an effort to raise the money needed to run away together. Needless to say, the forbidden love turns into a game of cat and mouse with hurt egos and possibly some spilled blood. The trailer makes the story look like a thriller.

"Last July, The Weinstein Company explained the reason for the delay was so that Vikander and Waltz would have more availability to promote Tulip Fever at a later time. They’re both busy actors, so the move made sense. TWC didn’t provide reasons for the delays that followed, but Chadwick’s drama is far from the first movie to sit on the shelf for a little too long at the studio." (Slashfilm)

"The Weinstein Company declined to comment on the decision, but a source with knowledge of the situation said the company changed the date due to marketplace conditions, having looked at the calendar and decided that February 24, 2017 was a better release date than July 15, 2016 based on the market. Another source said the company has learned a lesson from releasing last year’s “Woman in Gold” and “The Lady in the Van” that films appealing to older audiences but that aren’t Oscar favorites tend to perform better after the glut of awards season." The official synopsis reads:

Set in 17th century Amsterdam, Tulip Fever follows a married woman (Alicia Vikander) who begins a passionate affair with an artist (Dane DeHaan) hired to paint her portrait. The lovers gamble on the booming market for tulip bulbs as a way to raise money to run away together.

Tulip Fever is set for a US release date of 25 August, though there's no UK release date yet.
