THE SLENDER MAN, a crippling monster and a brand new trailer

The Slender Man is, at times, an invisible force that makes people do crazy, violent things. The creepy, well-dressed supernatural creature who originated as a pasta meme, has found its way into the public consciousness, and even inspired a real-life attempted murder a few years back. Now, the shady character is getting his own movie, and you can find out more in the brand new trailer below.

“He gets into your head … like a virus,” says one of the tormented girls in the trailer, which includes, among other images, a scalpel cutting an eyeball, lots of worms and, of course, the slender man.

Sony’s movie is set in a small town in Massachusetts, where four high school girls perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of the title character. However, things don't go as planned, and one of the girls mysteriously goes missing, prompting the realization that that she is, in fact, the slender man's latest victim.

The cast includes Joey King, Julia Goldani-Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso and Javier Botet. White directs from a script by David Birke, based on a character by Victor Surge. Producers are Bradley J. Fischer, James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, Robyn Meisinger and Sarah Snow.

In 2009, Eric Knudsen took to the Something Awful forum and posted two photoshopped images that appeared to show an abnormally tall, supernatural being. Other internet users took up Knudsen’s creation, dubbed Slender Man, and proceeded to turn the character into a boogeyman for the 21st century. Slender Man inspired memes, video games, and even an actual attempted murder in 2014, when two 12-year-old girls stabbed one of their classmates in an attempted sacrifice to the online ghoul. Now, Slender Man has his own big Hollywood movie from director Sylvain White. (via Slashfilm)

Slender Man opens May 18, 2018. Check out the trailer below.

The official synopsis reads:

In a small town in Massachusetts, four high school girls perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of SLENDER MAN. When one of the girls goes mysteriously missing, they begin to suspect that she is, in fact, HIS latest victim.
