THE NUN, a Corin Hardy demonic horror

Many movies have tried to scare us, but few have truly succeeded. Will The Nun, the horror from director Corin Hardy, be one of the successes? Warner Bros. has released what some have called an unsettling first trailer for their upcoming horror movie with the demonic sister from The Conjuring 2 returning to terrorize Taissa Farmiga's character.

The clip starts with a woman’s voiceover describing her visions of an evil nun, followed by a gravel-voiced sister asserting, “The abbey has a long history — not all of it good.”

The trailer ends with the young nun walking through the dark, unaware that she’s being followed by the evil one, who then jumps out and scares not just the nun, but the viewer too. The trailer concludes, “Pray for forgiveness.”

Producers are James Wan, who directed the two “Conjuring” movies, and Peter Safran, who produced both movies. The current script for The Nun is written by Gary Dauberman and Wan.

The demon nun came to life in The Conjuring 2 from a painting by Patrick Wilson’s paranormal investigator Ed Warren and later attacked Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine Warren. Demián Bichir stars as the priest summoned by the Vatican. (via Variety)

“It was really exciting, when I read [The Nun] script, that it was something new,” Hardy told EW. “So, it’s part of this universe that’s been established, with a character that appeared in a movie, but it wasn’t like doing a sequel or a remake.”

“I’ve come from a love of practical…It’s not just nostalgic, it’s things being real and tangible, and you can light them in front of the camera if they’re there, you can touch them, people can see them, you can make them wet and they look great. All of that stuff you can do in CG but it takes such a lot of work to do it to the right level…I always want to say, ‘Let’s do everything as much as we possibly can for real, including in-camera stunts, effects, and then use the CGI to be beautiful, original, invisible tool.’”

The Nun, starring Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons, will open on September 7. Watch the trailer below.

The official synopsis reads:

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
