THE MEG starring Jason Statham

Looking for a captivating shark movie? The Meg, starring Jason Statham, might be the answer. The movie is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 New York Times bestseller, “The Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.”

The premise is simple: the prehistoric megalodon did not go extinct around 2 million years ago, and has been discovered off the coast of China.

The trailer, cut to Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea” and accompanied by the tagline “Chomp on this,” begins with the occupants of an underwater marine research vessel encountering the meg, 75-foot-long predator, and proceeds to preview the inevitable movement of the giant shark towards human-infested beaches, with Statham as Jonas Taylor, the researcher. Taylor is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Bingbing), to save the crew, and the ocean. Rainn Wilson, as a fellow researcher, delivers plenty of punchlines throughout the clip, suggesting that rather than kill the fish, the team “just put a tracker on it.”

“Haven’t you ever seen Shark Week?” he asks.

Unsurprisingly, it seems like a tracker won’t do it.

John Turteltaub directed the Warner Bros. movie from a script by Dean Georgaris. Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Robert Taylor, Sophia Shuya Cai, Masi Oka and Jessica McNamee also star.

A presentation of Warner Bros Pictures and Middle Kingdom-based Gravity Pictures, The Meg is a production of di Bonaventura Pictures, Apelles Entertainment, Maeday Productions and WB’s China joint venture Flagship Entertainment, in association with Beijing Digital Impression Film.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Belle Avery and Colin Wilson are producers with Gerald R Molen, Randy Greenberg, Wayne Wei Jiang and Barrie Osborne exec producing. (via Deadline)

Gravity will distribute in China and Warner Bros. on the rest of the world. Release is set for August 10.

The full official synopsis reads:

“In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.”
