January is a tough month to swallow, so you if you find yourselves in need of romance, check out Azazel Jacobs' The Lovers.
The Lovers follows Mary (Debra Winger) and Michael (Tracy Letts) as an unhappy married couple. Both are having affairs (played by Aidan Gillen and Melora Walters, respectively) and are set to end their union, until they unexpectedly rekindle the passion between them and fall in love once again.
Jacobs he previously directed the 2011 film Terri, about an overweight and depressed teenager and his relationship with the unconventional assistant principal. He also directed all 12 episodes of British series Doll & Em, starring Emily Mortimer and Dolly Wells as an English actress and her best friend/personal assistant as they make their way through Hollywood. Most recently, he directed an episode of the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle.
The official synopsis reads:
Written and Directed by Azazel Jacobs, THE LOVERS is a refreshing, funny look at love, fidelity, and family, starring Debra Winger and Tracy Letts as a long-married and completely dispassionate husband and wife. Both are in the midst of serious affairs and are increasingly committed to their new partners. But on the brink of officially calling it quits, a spark between them suddenly and unexpectedly reignites, leading them into an impulsive romance that forces them to navigate the hilarious complications of “cheating” on their respective lovers. A mixture of humor and powerful emotion, the story is a uniquely honest take on modern marriage.
"It’s a spare template but from the evidence of the film’s new trailer, which you can take a look at below, Jacobs and his actors will find plenty of ways to inject the familiar outline with radical, inventive streams of dialogue and physical performance, as well as some subtly expressive bits of framing, editing, and camerawork. The thrill of watching that, of seeing a group of smart people take an easy premise out for an imaginative spin, is as joyous and admirable to me as anything involving a Baby Groot, which is no small feat mind you."
