Warner Bros. takes the DC Extended Universe underwater with the release of the upcoming Aquaman, starring Game of Thrones' Jason Momoa. The first trailer just premiered at San Diego Comic Con and while Momoa’s Aquaman was a highlight of 2016’s Justice League, this is the first time we’ve gotten to see him in action on his own.

Directed by James Wan, Momoa stars as Arthur Curry, a half-human, half-Atlantean man caught between two worlds. The son of Atlantean royalty and heir to the ocean throne, Aquaman's allegiance is put to a test when his half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), prepares to unite the seven kingdoms and wage war against the surface dwellers that threaten the oceans.

Amber Heard also stars as Mera, the daughter and future queen of the Xebel, an Atlantean tribe headed up by King Nereus, played by Dolph Lundgren. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will portray Black Manta, a ruthless mercenary treasure hunter and Aquaman’s greatest foe. Aquaman has the ability to control the tides, communicate with other sea life, swim at supersonic speeds, and possess superhuman strength. On top of it all, he gets a trident and scale armor.

Highlights in the new clip include a shot of Momoa wearing the old-school yellow outfit from the comics, as well as an action sequence featuring Nicole Kidman's Atlanna. Also, you'll get to watch other insights into the Marine Marvel’s aquatic family, including Patrick Wilson as Orm (AKA Ocean Master), and an epic origin-story scene in which a young Arthur Curry (Kaan Guldur) marshals the righteous anger of an aquarium full of sharks.

Another highlight is the above mentioned Mera, who manages to neg Aquaman — “You do your best thinking when you’re not thinking at all” — and jumps out of a plane with no parachute — “Redheads! You gotta love ‘em!”.

"What could be greater than (being) a king?" Aquaman asks at a different moment. "A hero," Mera answers.

"I wanted to create a superhero film that we’ve never quite seen before," Wan said at the Comic Con panel. "I wanted our film to be more unique. So my movie plays more like a science-fiction fantasy film than a traditional super hero movie."

Wilson, also playing a villain, described his experience as "the most physically exhausting movie I've ever done. You know when you hear stunt guys say, "I've never done this before,' you're in uncharted territory." (via The Hollywood Reporter)

“James has done an incredible job with his team,” Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich told Entertainment Weekly. “The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”

Producer Peter Safran added that the film has “the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels…it’s a testament to James’ unique vision. I think it’s an extraordinary step in the DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”

“The underwater stuff has never been executed like this before,” adds Geoff Johns. “The visual effects shots coming in are just beautiful. James can switch modes from horror to big bright colorful action to really emotional scenes. He’s so able to hit all these different genres.” Johns’ comment about “bright colorful action” is likely a deliberate attempt to distance Aquman from past gloomy DC films Batman v Superman and Justice League. About not having released a trailer until now, the director explains: "This movie is filled to the gills with VFX, and the process is as slow and laborious as a sea-slug! Yes, even shots for the trailers take forever to do, and I refuse to put out anything that might be construed as subpar."

The movie premieres on December 21.

Official synopsis reads:

Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, "Aquaman," starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be... a king.
