- BALLERS: Most Guys (recap) August 18, 2016 1:13 PM by Ana Banu
I think it's worth mentioning from the get go that the latest episode of Ballers has an alpaca running around someone's yard. Also, the episode is about Spencer trying to mentor rude Travis while avoiding his medical issues, Reggie and How buying the alpaca in an attempt to cheer up Vernon and Ricky encouraging Charles to stand up for himself. Let's start at the beginning though. Spencer Strasmore finally goes back to his doctor like they discussed, but not to take care of his real problems, but to get more pills. She refuses to refill his prescription and tells him he has osteoarthritis. Spencer, of course, gets mad that he can't get his Vicodin, so he decides to ignore his health some more and go get his drugs from somewhere else. To keep his mind in the business game, he demands t ... read more

- MARON: quick recap and news about the (non) future July 14, 2016 4:32 PM by Ana Banu
Last week's episode of Maron brought two Marc Maron's to our attention, in what I think was an attempt to give us a fuller image of what it means to be a human being, faulty as hell, yet infinitely magical at times. In fact, the entire season was about this split between the person you might be(come) and the person you are in the present moment. So, Marc hit the road in order to get some sense of identity back. What else is he to do? He barely has no friends, no love life outside some manipulative, self-centered games, no career and no sense of emotional security. What he does have, on the other hand, is some strength for having put himself through the pangs of rehab and having made it on the other side? Is his life worth living? I'm not sure he believes that, but at least he's trying. ... read more

- THE MINDY PROJECT: You've Got Mail (finale recap) July 10, 2016 10:32 PM by Ana Banu
The jig is up in the latest episode of The Mindy Project. The episode begins with Danny showing up at Mindy's door to drop off their kid and give his baby momma the news: he's getting married. Things don't go very smoothly though. Instead of giving Mindy the information right away, he goes through the pangs of lying. He makes up this fake annoyance with the disaster in Mindy's apartment and causes her to have a crying breakdown, then he just leaves the apartment and drops off the wedding invitation in the mail box, on his way out. Meanwhile, another day starts and Mindy gets ready for a girl getaway to Miami with Chelsea and Whitney. She's trying to get over Jody who managed to piss her off and postpone their romantic plot a bit more. Now, he keeps leaving Mindy apology gifts, like a ... read more

- CASUAL: 100 cows (recap) July 10, 2016 8:13 PM by Ana Banu
I enjoy Casual. Alex, Valerie and Laura make up a weird family triangle, with intricate relationships that bring up bits and pieces of real human experiences, which isn't necessarily rare on television nowadays, but the extra layer of darkness helps keep the audience interested. This week's episode, "100 cows", offers insights into all three lives, without actually intertwining them too much, as was the case with season one where if one of the character had a problem, it was most likely cause with one of the other two. So, this week, Alex gets obsessed with making his ex girlfriend jealous - he inspired the title of the episode -, Valerie gets into the dating business again, while Laura enjoys the perks of a seemingly uncomplicated lesbian relationship. Basically, the Casual chara ... read more

- Quick recap: Nashville and Empire November 23, 2015 10:35 AM by Ana Banu
Last week's episode of Nashville lacked one element that I'm not yet sure how I feel about. I'm talking about Juliette Barnes, who is in rehab after trying to kill herself by jumping off a rooftop and managing to kill her manager in the process. We see a lot of Gabriella this episode, the woman who will become Luke's partner by the end of the episode, after a few games of hard-to-get. In fact, Luke tells his son Colt about her, but the boy doesn't really care anymore since his father treated his recent trauma poorly. However, the show start with Colt's girlfriend taking selfies of herself. Maddie is acting like the teen version of Juliette Barnes. She dyed her hair blonde behind her mother's back and is itching to get into the music business. Also, she's snappy and cold with Deacon w ... read more

- Last Sunday Drama: Homeland and The Good Wife October 31, 2015 11:08 AM by Ana Banu
Last week's episode of Homeland was written by Ron Nyswaner and directed by John Coles, and it deals with a variety of issues from the geopolitical chess games in Syria to Carrie and Quinn's get together. Saul is working hard to establish the new CIA’s project in overthrowing Syrian president Assad and replace him with the military’s Gen. Youssef (Igal Naor). The general comes to Germany with his daughter and wife to take care of some health issues and finds himself surrounded by the CIA peeps. Midway through the episode, he has a talk with Saul in the garden, where he's informed of the CIA's plan to make him Assad's successor. Saul is, as expected, a master manipulator, using both direct coercion plus friendly techniques - the men share a cigarette while having the big discussion. “Thi ... read more

- BALLERS: Flamingos (finale) August 27, 2015 9:09 AM by Ana Banu
"Hurricane Joe, that’s what happened" is the start of HBO's Ballers finale. This could easily be the tagline of the show, with Joe replaced according to context. So, our episode begins with Spencer making his way towards his office, where he encounters the mayhem that Joe left behind. Everybody is still in shock, as Joe not only cursed the hell out of big boss Anderson, but he also destroyed a few things around the office after he was fired. Of course, that's not what Spencer hears from Anderson, who frames the story a bit differently. Moreover, he offers Spencer the promotion of a lifetime and $5 million investment in the new sports department which he would rule over in case he accepts his new office with a view, a 39-foot speedboat, and his new black receptionist Virginia (who turns ... read more

- THE JIM GAFFIGAN SHOW: Go Shorty, It's Your Birthday August 26, 2015 8:32 AM by Ana Banu
Somewhere in New York City, Jim Gaffigan finds out from his wife, Jeannie, that it's her birthday. Moreover, the lady doesn't want anything, no party, and especially no gift, but more than anything she'd love it if her husband wouldn't even mention what day it is. The biggest problem now is, of course, to figure out if she's telling the truth or is just testing Jim. He is inclined to believe her, but also he might just be going with the easier scenario. To help with that dilemma is Blanca, their nanny, who disrupts the couple's morning with a pinata and a birthday card for Jeannie, which turns the matron of the house into a liar, because she convinces her children that it isn't really her birthday, but Blanca's. Disaster avoided! Jeannie might be speaking the truth after all according t ... read more

- MASTERS OF SEX: Two Scents August 21, 2015 6:53 PM by Ana Banu
Last Sunday's episode of Masters of Sex dealt with a very important aspect: chemistry. We'll go straight to it. Midway through the episode, the newest MoS couple in need of sexual counseling came to a painful truth about the future of their relationship. When asked on an intake form to describe his initial attraction to actress Isabella Ricci - now his wife -, Al Neely wrote: “She was 20 feet tall.” Ricci remembers the story a bit different. At the Masters and Johnson’s sex clinic they realize the fire is no longer there because it was never real. If Neely was attracted to the idea of having sex with a big-screen movie star, Ricci was attracted to his huge attraction. Her face glows when she talks about the way he said “I want you” for the first time or the moment he “had” her in a Roma ... read more

- BALLERS: Head-on August 21, 2015 12:06 PM by Ana Banu
When you say Ballers, you say dynamic editing - here and there - on equally dynamic songs (like "Fightin" during last Monday's episode), beautiful women, immature sportsmen, and one dedicated fellow willing to risk his personal life in order to protect his clients. Spencer, our lead man, has a few issues to deal with this episode, now that he knows there's nothing wrong with his head - tumor wise. He informs his doctor about his recurrent Balsamo dreams - the guy he beat a while back which prompted the dude to be thrown out of the football team. The doctor tells him to go see a therapist, but also throws this line in there - “Just nut up and go see the guy already.” And what do you know? Minutes later, Spencer concocts a situation where he drives out of the parking lot the wrong way and ... read more
