Action coming your way in the upcoming Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed 2015 drug war drama finds Benicio Del Toro reprising the role of Alejandro opposite Josh Brolin as CIA operative Matt Graver. Villeneuve has been replaced in the director’s chair by Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima. You can watch the final trailer below.

The movie picks up during an escalation of the drug war at the US-Mexico border after the cartels start sending terrorists across to American soil. Day of the Soldado finds Alejandro being recruited once again by Matt Graver to kidnap the daughter of an infamous drug kingpin in order to start a war between dealing cartels that will hopefully wipe both of them off the map. When the plan is exposed, however, Alejandro is ordered to execute the daughter (Isabela Moner), but not even a trained assassin like Alejandro is willing to murder a child.

“He has the chance for an eye for an eye, but sees a young girl going through what his [executed] daughter went through,” Del Toro tells USA Today about the sequel. “He has to decide to follow orders or protect the girl. It’s just one thing about this screenplay that makes it interesting.”

Stefano Sollima helms the film, with a script by original Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan. In addition to Del Toro and Brolin, Sicario: Day of the Soldado stars Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Shea Whigham, and Catherine Keener.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado opens in theaters nationwide June 29.

Alejandro kidnaps the kingpin’s daughter to inflame the conflict – but when the girl is seen as collateral damage, her fate will come between the two men as they question everything they are fighting for.
