New FAHRENHEIT 451 in town, powered by HBO

HBO has released a new full-length trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, which shows off the world’s dystopian society in which books are banned and burned because "they contain insanity", among others.

The movie stars Black Panther's Michael B. Jordan as Guy Montag, a fireman who comes to question his job, while Shape of Water's Michael Shannon plays Captain Beatty, the captain of his station and the bad guy who tries to keep Beatty from stepping out of his lane. 99 Houses director Ramin Bahrani directed the movie and co-wrote it alongside Amir Naderi (Vegas: Based on a True Story). Sofia Boutella (The Mummy, Kingsman: The Secret Service) stars as Clarisse, an informant caught between the competing interests of Montag and Beatty. The cast also includes Lilly Singh (Bad Moms) as Raven, a tabloid reporter who works with the fire department to spread the ministry’s propaganda by broadcasting its book-burning raids to fans.

The trailer shows off a bit more of the world than Bradbury's novel, where books are banned and citizens’ behavior is closely regulated via pharmaceuticals. In the clip, we see Montag showing a classroom full of children a pair of books as he explains what he and his colleagues do, and he says by the time they’ve grown up, there “won’t be one book left.” But Montag begins to have doubts about his role as book-burner, and authors such as Kafka are among the many he hasn't read. His smart home tells him that it was a misconception that firemen ever extinguished fires, and his boss tells him that people are “made equal by the fire,” and that when they’re equal, they’re happy.

Fahrenheit 451 is an HBO Films presentation of a Noruz Films, Brace Cove, and Outlier Society production; executive producers, Ramin Bahrani, Sarah Green, Michael B. Jordan, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen; David Coatsworth produces. The behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Kramer Morgenthau, ASC, production designer Mark Digby, costume designer Meghan Kasperlik, editor Alex Hall and composers Matteo Zingales & Antony Partos.

The movie premieres on May 19th. Check out the trailer below.
