MOWGLY, something the jungle has never seen

Warner Bros. has released the first Mowgli trailer and it looks like something I'd go to the cinema for.

Closer to Ruyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book than the Disney version, Andy Serkis’ upcoming movie shows Mowgli (Rohan Chand) as a fearless child torn between his upbringing in the jungle and the human world he has never known. There's no way Warner Bros' Mowgli will be upbeat and sparkly, and the studio is making major efforts to differentiate the movie from Disney’s 2016 The Jungle Book.

"People are so used to the 1968 [Disney animated version]," Serkis said at the CinemaCon last month. "This is trying to delve into Kipling's book and the journey for Mowgli as a outsider, as an other, trying to find his identity." (via The Hollywood Reporter)

The characters you've heard of are all there. At the beginning of the trailer, Mowgli is told by his friend Bagheera, voiced by Christian Bale, “When you were a cub, I looked you in the eye and saw no fear.”

The CGI footage for Mowgli features genuinely threatening beasts such as the malevolent tiger Shere Khan, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who says towards the end of the clip: “My, my, how you’ve grown.”

The movie opens October 19th and also stars Cate Blanchett as the sinister snake, Kaa, Naomie Harris as Nisha, the female wolf, who adopts the baby Mowgli as one of her cubs, Andy Serkis as the wise bear, Baloo; Peter Mullan as the leader of the wolf pack, Akela, Jack Reynor as Mowgli’s Brother Wolf, Eddie Marsan as Nisha’s mate, Vihaan, and Tom Hollander as the scavenging hyena, Tabaqui.

Check out the trailer below.

The official synopsis reads:

The story follows the upbringing of the human child Mowgli, raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own. All but one: the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins.
