MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS, a turbulent story of family rivalry

Here is the first trailer for Mary Queen of Scots, starring Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Brooklyn) as the young monarch and Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, I, Tonya) as her rival Queen Elizabeth I.

The period drama explores the turbulent life of Ronan’s Mary Stuart, who became Queen of France at age 16 and widowed at 18. Robbie plays Mary’s biggest rival, her cousin Elizabeth I. Each young Queen is fascinated by the other, but their loyalty to their countries is threatened when Mary asserts her claim to the English throne. In the trailer, Mary Stuart returns to her native Scotland, now under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. Mary hopes to reign in Scotland harmoniously, despite pressures from patriarchal counsels to pursue war.

"Do not play into their hands. Our hatred is precisely what they hope for," Mary cries to Elizabeth in the clip.

Former House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon scripted the drama, which draws inspiration from the book Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy.

Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Martin Compston, Ismael Cordova, Brendan Coyle, Ian Hart, Adrian Lester, James McArdle, with David Tennant, and Guy Pearce also star. Josie Rourke directed the film from Willimon’s script. This is Rourke's directorial debut. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Debra Hayward are the producers.

Focus Features opens Mary Queen of Scots in select theaters on December 7.

The official synopsis reads:

Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.
