Woody Allen is back with a new story, not set in Manhattan but in Coney Island. Wonder Wheel looks colorful and full of intrigue, as one would expect. You can check out the trailer below.

Set at Coney Island in the 1950s, Wonder Wheel stars Winslet as Ginny, a former actor whose life is turned upside down by the appearance of her carousel operator husband Humpty’s (Jim Belushi) estranged daughter (Juno Temple), who is on the run from the mob. “I know where all the bodies are buried,” Temple says at one point in the trailer. Justin Timberlake plays Mickey, a young lifeguard who Ginny falls for. The trailer actually opens on a beach scene as Mickey presides over the water. Soon enough, the imagery takes a dramatic turn. At one point, Timberlake growls “I know what it is you did,” and the clip then cuts to Winslet asking “Don’t you think you’re being a little melodramatic?”

Wonder Wheel continues Allen’s recent trend for period film, following the likes of 2011’s time-travel comedy Moonlight in Paris and last year’s Café Society, which was set in 1930s Hollywood. In addition there was Crisis in Six Scenes, a 60s-set comedy-drama that marked Allen’s first foray into streaming television. The series, which like Wonder Wheel was distributed by Amazon, attracted scathing reviews, with the Guardian’s Sam Wollaston describing it as “insignificat, lazy [and] lame”. Amazon will also produce Allen’s next project, an as-yet untitled drama starring Selina Gomez Elle Fanning and Jude Law. (via The Guardian)

“There was not one single moment that I was not utterly terrified,” the Winslet said of shooting the film. “It’s an incredibly complicated character — maybe the most complicated female character I’ve ever had the challenge of grappling with.” (via Entertainment Weekly)

In addition to Wonder Wheel, Winslet recently signed on for the Avatar sequels, which will reunite her with Titanic director James Cameron. Allen has another untitled project in the works with another star-studded cast that includes Jude Law and Selena Gomez.

Wonder Wheel makes its world premiere October 14 as the closing-night film of the New York Film Festival. It opens in limited release on December 1. Check out the trailer below.
