Jackie Chan as THE FOREIGNER

STXfilms has released the first trailer for The Foreigner, the action thriller being directed by Casino Royale‘s Martin Campbell and starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan. The clip comes ahead of the pic’s October 13 theatrical release.

It doesn't look like anything you might have seen Chan before. The actor made a long lasting career out of playing good guys with smiles on their faces even when jumping out windows and hanging off ledges. He’s the protagonist here but in a different way. A London businessman, he has to witness his daughter being killed in a senseless act of politically motivated terrorism. After this event, Chan's character becomes committed to finding the bombers and has to force the hard of a British government official (Brosnan) in order to do so. Don't push a good man too far, the trailer says and that's exactly what the movie is about.

"What’s really weird about this trailer is seeing Chan playing a stone-cold soldier and assassin, a role he has generally eschewed over his lengthy career. Chan rose to fame by injecting a certain amount of levity into his martial arts – the way he dispatched bad guys was always about creating joyful gasps and giggles. But the man is 63 years old now, so it’s not too surprising to see him playing the grizzled, gun-toting, Liam Neeson-esque tough guy that has become increasingly popular over the past decade. This is the kind of role that demands gravitas instead of physical prowess and I’m admittedly curious to see if Chan can pull it off." (Slashfilm)

The official synopsis reads:

The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is a timely action thriller from the director of Casino Royale. The film tells the story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love — his teenage daughter — is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.

David Marconi wrote the script based on Stephen Leather’s novel The Chinaman. Chan, Wayne Marc Godfrey, Arthur Sarkissian, Qi Jian Hong, Claire Kupchak, Scott Lumpkin, Jamie Marshall and Cathy Schulman are producers. STX has had this in the works since securing Chan in June 2015. (via Deadline)
