A MANIAC journey with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill

“Do you know where you are right now?”

So begins the exciting upcoming Netflix project called Maniac. The new limited series from director Cary Joji Fukunaga stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.

The trailer begins with the two actors, who play Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, being interrogated by The Leftovers' Justin Theroux who plays Dr. James Mantleray, a dude who claims he can repair anything about the mind with a sequence of pills of his own invention.

“Is this therapy now?” asks Annie. “It’s not therapy, it’s science,” Mantleray responds. “Once you begin to appreciate the structure of the mind, there’s no reason to believe anything about us can’t be changed. Pain can be destroyed. The mind can be solved.”

Up until this first clip of the newest Netflix series details on this high-profile remake were sparse. The 10-episode series will tell the stories of Annie and Owen. Annie is disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia.

“My head doesn’t work right,” explains Owen in the trailer. “I thought maybe these people could fix me. It sounds stupid.” Replies Annie, “That doesn’t sound stupid to me.”

Loosely based on a Norwegian series of the same name, Maniac doubles the fantasies of the original, splitting out the escapist adventures of two patients in the midst of an experimental drug trial. Together it looks like the series is going to put Hill and Stone’s characters through a series of alternate realities, including some “Lord of the Rings”-style journeys, Jazz Age society soirees, and Hill in a crisp throwback Warren Moon jersey. The series comes from writer/creator Patrick Somerville, novelist and alum of The Leftovers. Hill and Stone are joined by Sally Field, Jemima Kirke, Julia Garner and Sonoya Mizuno.

Maniac premieres Friday, September 21 on Netflix.

The full official synopsis reads:

Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray, claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak—draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. … Things do not go as planned.
