THE SISTERS BROTHER, a Jacques Audiard gem

The Sisters Brothers is a dark comedy starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly and Riz Ahmed. Watch the trailer below.

The film is based on Patrick Dewitt’s 2011 novel of the same name and marks the English-language debut of French director Jacques Audiard. The filmmaker is best known for A Prophet, Rust and Bone, and Dheepan, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2015.

The Sisters Brothers is set in 1851 and stars Phoenix and Reilly as sibling assassins (‘Brothers by blood, Sisters by name’, as the tagline says) who are tasked with traveling from Oregon City to San Francisco to murder a chemist (Ahmed) who has stolen from their boss. The brothers work with a prospector (Gyllenhaal) to track the chemist down, but their plan gets turned upside down when everyone discovers what the chemist is really cooking. Rutger Hauer, Carol Kane, and Rebecca Root co-star.

Audiard wrote the script with longtime collaborator Thomas Bidegain (the latter incidentally made his directing debut with 2015’s Les Cowboys which also starred Reilly). Reilly originally optioned the novel and produces alongside Michael De Luca, Alison Dickey, Why Not’s Pascal Caucheteux and Annapurna’s Megan Ellison. (via Deadline)

"The Sisters Brothers will probably devolve into some Sam Peckinpah-esque violence, with some characters not making out at the end. If this film was that sort of experience alone, I'd still be looking forward to this movie, but probably wouldn't rush to see it. However, it's the signature blend of semi-Wes Anderson style, humor and slick performances that really makes what I've just seen really shine. To borrow from the film's plot, The Sisters Brothers is hidden gold in a riverbed, and the efforts of director / co-writer Jacques Audilard and his cast are the formula that seems to have found said gold." Annapurna is distributing the movie this fall but has not set an official release date. Expect The Sisters Brothers to debut on the fall film festival circuit, possibly the Venice International Film Festival given Audiard’s international reach.

Watch the first trailer below and listen to Gloria Jones’ soulful rendition of ‘Tainted Love’.

I'm looking forward to this genre-hybrid filled with talented faces, how about you?
